A map of every major AI tool by use case — sized by web traffic, coloured by the model underneath, and flagged where the usual rankings get it wrong
AI Tools Market Share
“ChatGPT has 900 million weekly users” invites a reading of settled dominance. It also obscures more than it reveals. Web traffic figures measure a consumer website; not the API, not the mobile app, not the model embedded in Word or an IDE. Disaggregate the interface from the underlying model and most of the apparent variety in the AI tools market collapses onto four or five labs. Disaggregate the traffic figures from the actual user base and tools like Microsoft Copilot (running on 20 million paid enterprise seats) and Meta AI (with a billion users across WhatsApp and Instagram) become nearly invisible on the standard leaderboard. The three charts in this cluster examine what the usage figures actually count, who built the models underneath the logos, and which platforms were already in decline before the tools category existed.
